Here's a short list of the best theatre, music, art and eco. happenings for the coming weekend:


Lookingglass Peter Pan

We ♥ snarky fairies!   This is not your Disney Peter Pan.   Lookingglass has created a compelling, urban, edgy production with punk pirates in black leather and Tink, true to Barrie's storyline, as a jealous rival for Peter Pan's affections, who goes so far as to call Wendy a slut and try to thwart her at every turn. 

Lookingglass cautiously recommends this show for the 12 and up crowd, so we did a parents night out for the first round.  The pirates are intense, but if you're not particularly prudish parents, there's nothing too over the top for most older children.   Just don't expect any sparkly wings and green tunics here.  We thought the production was lots of fun and plan to bring our 7 & 9 year olds.   ChiIL Mama will have a full review up this week.   Check out the Lookingglass site HERE for details.

ChiIL Mama also highly recommends Traces.   Like Peter Pan, Traces characters also utilize chalk drawing on the stage floor, fly through the air, and play on a stripped down, industrial stage.   This high art pairing of conceptual performance art and impressive circus arts was right up our urban alley.   We'll have a full review up this week.   Click HERE for details.

Humanities Fest  It's that time of year again, and the annual Chicago Humanities Fest is brimming with too many amazing events to mention.   If you haven't gone yet, it ends November 14th.   So check out their site, before it's too late.  This year's theme is The Body.

Nov. 12 &13th:

DRUMLine Live & Ralph's World: Family Friendly Entertainment at The Center for Performing Arts at GSU

DRUMLine Live on Friday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m., returning by popular demand following a sold-out 2009 Center engagement.  Theatergoers will be wowed by hot choreography and athletic feats performed by steppers, the rhythmic sounds of trumpets, and the speed and pulsating force of the drumline.  The “DRUMLine Live” cast is assembled from students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the country. 

 



Saturday, Nov. 13 at 3 p.m. brings Chicago's kid-rock sensation and Playhouse Disney music star Ralph Covert to The Center for Ralph's World, a special concert event that will feature greatest hits and songs from his new album.

skills/gifts.  Feel free to bring items to give away and/or skills to
share.  Bring and/or take items….everything is free!
Some skills that will be shared: worm composting, back massage, craft 
table, music, hair cuts, etc.

There will be plenty of items as well: clothing, kitchenware, books,
movies…and much more!

All are welcome!  This will be a kid friendly event!  If people would
like to drop off items early, any time after 8am is fine.  Leftover
items at the end of the day will be donated to a local non-profit  organization.

This Saturday, Chicago Bluegrass and Blues organizers, along with your help, will choose two talented bands to win a spot at the main event on 12/4 at the Congress Theater.  Now in its third year, the annual indoor music festival being held in Chicago from December 3-5th, 2010 at the Double Door, Congress Theater, and Lincoln Hall. The winning bands will be showered with praise and good fortune and win bragging rights to last a lifetime. Plus, who wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to share the main stage with Edward Sharpe, Grace Potter, and living legend Honeyboy Edwards?  Out of over 30 band submissions, only two lucky acts will win a coveted spot at CBB Fest and $250.  But first, we need to whittle away the others in a CBB Last Banjo Standing play off contest this Saturday at Kinetic Playground.  Voting is currently underway and everyone who wants to make a life- changing difference for some deserving artists is encouraged to vote once per day at http://www.CBBFestival.com/contests through 11:59pm on November 12, 2010. Each e-mail address will be allotted one vote per day. Chicago Bluegrass & Blues Festival organizers will choose 5 of the TOP 10 Vote-Getting artists to play a battle of the bands at the Kinetic Playground, at which we'll choose our two winners.  The Last Banjo Standing Battle of the Bands is open to the public, and will be held at Kinetic Playground on Saturday November 13th. Admission is $7, doors open at 8pm, music begins at 9pm, and this is a 21+ show. “The Last Banjo Standing contest is a fantastic opportunity for local bands to join an amazing line up of national headliners for a set on a Chicago stage,” says Chicago Bluegrass and Blues Festival producer Michael Raspatello, “The Shams, Sexfist, and Great Divide, former LBS winners have all been playing CBB fest ever since.”   Is your favorite band in first place?
