Play Locally-Look for ChiIL Mama This Weekend

Saturday

Love The Smiths, Morissey, Joy Division and Rapture?   Hate paying big bucks for a sitter?    Get a kick out of rocking out with your littles and introducing your punk kin to great music from your youth?

Then YOU need to be at Empty Bottle today at 4pm to check out the talented Rabiela family.

SAT . 4/2/11 ( 4:00pm , Free (kids); $3 buy
The Green Bean presents

THE SOCIALISTS, aka the Rabiela family, range in age from 8 to 13 with drumming and roadey-ing from father Fernando. They may not meet the height requirement to ride all the coasters at 6 Flags, but this group knows good music. Playing primarily MORISSEY and SMITHS covers, with a little JOY DIVISION and RAPTURE thrown in for good morose measure, THE SOCIALISTS re-define the family band - no "Sunshine Day" at this show. In the spirit of the band, kids are FREE!

We're interviewing the band and will be posting clips from their show as part of our mid April feature on ROCK KIDS which will also include Purple Apple, The Blisters, and When Flying Feels Like Falling.

Sunday

That's Weird Grandma by Barrel of Monkeys
This critically acclaimed, long running hit has been around since my ten year old son was 1 month old!    Nonetheless, their regular 8pm Sunday show time has been a bit daunting, whenever we thought about bringing the kids.

This Sunday, you can still make bed time and see a great show, too.   Have the best of both worlds, with a 2pm show, this weekend only.

After teaching creative writing in the CPS system, BOM’s ensemble of actors, comedians, musicians and playwrights selects and adapts some of the thousands of stories generated by children for stage presentation. The result has been an audience favorite—a show that is “safe” for all ages, yet very much appreciated by an adult audience. “That’s Weird, Grandma” changes each week according to audience votes (switching one to three sketches each performance), and each show runs about one hour. The show started in April 2001, and has produced over 500 stories and musical numbers.
We'll be shooting the show and interviewing their artist director, Luke Hatton, who is also a Chi Town father of a 1 year old.    Look for our photo filled feature and video interview soon.   And catch 'em live while you can.   These guys are a hoot!
