Fun All Week!-Play Locally

The Shams Band at Do Division-Free Tuesday Empty Bottle show with RSVP

We usually save our fav "to do's" for the weekends, but this week is an exception, with GREAT stuff goin' down early this week.   Here are ChiIL Mama's top week day pixs for Monday through Wednesday.

MONDAY (support the arts-and I don't mean let an art school hottie crash on your couch...)

Where is Where: The AIADO and Fashion Graduate Thesis Exhibition 2011
On View June 11–25 in SAIC Sullivan Galleries

Public Reception Monday, June 13, 6:00–8:00 p.m.
SAIC Sullivan Galleries, 33 S. State St., 7th floor
Gallery HoursTuesday–Saturday, 11:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

Where is Where, showcasing design from the Departments of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects (AIADO) and Fashion, brings together work by more than fifty SAIC graduate students. Through their individual approaches, they present new design solutions, situating their works within the inter-spaces of cultural and built systems. The works explore the unseen aspects of our society—many of which have been forgotten or overlooked—by reinhabiting space, challenging perceptions of interiority, and redefining values. Presented during the 2011 NeoCon, North America's largest design exposition and conference for commercial interiors, the exhibition is free and open to the public.

Curated by AIADO faculty Felicia Ferrone and Jess Giffin, the exhibition features work from the following programs at SAIC:
• Master of Architecture
• Master of Architecture with an Emphasis in Interior Architecture
• Master of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture
• Master of Design in Designed Objects
• Master of Design in Fashion, Body and Garment
• Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Fashion, Body and Garment

Also on view as part of Where is Where in the Sullivan Galleries is the advanced studio group project LOADED: SAICin Milan, which was presented during the 2011 Milan International Furniture Fair; Industry Partners: Living in a Smart City; finalists from the Designers of Tomorrow competition sponsored by Delta Faucet;and a five-year GFRY Design Studio retrospective.

LOADED: SAICin Milan showcases the works of 15 AIADO graduate and undergraduate students who participated in the annual Milan International Furniture Fairin April 2011. The provocative objects presented in LOADED explore the history, physicality, and currency of two catalytic materials: iron and sugar. In addition to the 13 unique objects (lighting, tableware, and jewelry) created for the exhibit, two of the projects—one in sugar, the other in iron—have been produced in multiples specifically for the show. Elements of the exhibition design also engage in this investigation, resulting in custom cast-iron display fixtures and sculptural sugar props.

Designers of Tomorrow highlights a partnership with SAIC sponsored by Meredith Corporation and presented by the Delta Faucet Company, which has invited SAIC to participate in an annual design competition—to propose an original and innovative use of one or more Delta® brand products in a residential environment beyond the traditional kitchen and bathroom applications—now in its second year. This year, three SAIC students have received awards from Delta Faucet: Alysse Filipek (BFA 2013), recipient of the Grand Prize/$5,000 Scholarship for her Project Revive; Zhe Zhang (MDes. 2011), recipient of the Students’ Choice Award/$2,500 Scholarship for the project Umbrella Pot; and Jamie Sandy (MArc. 2011), recipient of the Readers’ Choice Award/$2,500 Scholarship for the project Bamboo-Vero.

The GFRY (pronounced “Geoffrey”) Studio was established at SAIC by Motorola in 2005, in memory of Chief Marketing Officer Geoffrey Frost. (Abbreviating Geoffrey’s name to four letters reflects the strategy devised by Frost for Motorola’s iconic devices such as the RAZR, PEBL, and SLVR.) A collaborative, interdisciplinary design and fabrication studio, GFRY actively cooperates with industry to produce innovative objects, media, environments, and experiences. The studio produces work for targeted public opportunities such as art, design, and technology expositions; design competitions; and topical research publications.  Each year, members of the SAIC faculty choose one noteworthy proposal on which to base the innovative efforts of the GFRY Studio; the retrospective includes highlights from these projects—WaterShed (2006-07), 18%Gray (2007-08), 2000 Watt Living (2008-09), Re: (2009-10), and Com(m)a (currently ongoing).

Exhibition hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and admission is always free and open to the public. A free public reception will be held Monday, June 13, 6-8 p.m. For more information, please call 312.629.6635 or visit www.saic.edu/exhibitions.

Big congrats to one of our favorite local Theatres, Lookingglass, who just won a well deserved Tony Award for Best Regional Theatre 2011!    We were awed and impressed in the last year, by Hephaestus, Peter Pan, and their frequently remounted, though always excellent, Alice.   We had a chance to review all of these phenomenal productions here at ChiIL Mama.   They have a new production that just opened, The Last Act of Lilka Kadison.    We haven't had a chance to see it ourselves yet, but hope to check it out soon.   The show runs Wednesday-Sunday through July 24th.    Special programs this week are below:

Tuesday, June 14 at 6:00pm
First Person: A Conversation with Holocaust Survivor Estelle Laughlin moderated by Hal Gershowitz
Lookingglass Theatre, 821 N Michigan Ave, Chicago More information>
Sunday, June 19 at 5:00 pm
Panel Discussion: Intergenerational Conversations About the Holocaust: Are Some Stories Better Left Untold?
Lookingglass Theatre, 821 N Michigan Ave, Chicago
