Play Locally: Swedish Museum Saturday-Flicka, Ricka, Dicka and Their New Skates

FLICKA, RICKA & DICKA CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS

Reissued after 30 years, a classic Scandinavian children’s book will be introduced and read at the Swedish American Museum, 5211 N. Clark Street, Chicago, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, November 19.

The free program on the updated work, “Flicka, Ricka, Dicka and Their New Skates” by Maj Lindman, will launch the holiday season at the 35-year-old Immigration Museum and its 10-year-old Brunk Children’s Museum.

In addition to readings of the story and photo opportunities with characters from the book, family members in attendance may enjoy working on holiday crafts, playing games and snacking on hot chocolate and Swedish cookies.

Lindman’s popular tale relates the experiences of blue-eyed blonde triplets Flicka, Ricka and Dicka as they try out Christmas gifts of new skates. The adventure includes saving their friend, Bertie, after a skating accident.

The author, educated at the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm, has written and illustrated many timeless childhood stories for age levels from pre-kindergarten to third grade. In addition to the trio of girls, subjects include three little boys named Snipp, Snapp and Snurr.

The updated deluxe hardcover edition of “Flicka, Ricka and Dicka and Their New Skates” also contains paper dolls. Copies may be purchased for $14.99 each, subject to discounts for Museum members.

The November 19 program is co-sponsored by the publisher, Albert Whitman & Company. Reservations are recommended. Call 773-728-8111, extension 26, or register online at www.SwedishAmericanMuseum.org.

**ChiIL Mama loves the award winning Swedish American Museum.   Their turn of the century village is a great indoor play space to spark children's imaginations.   Their popular Christmas Breakfast With Tomten (Swedish Santa) is hands down the best in Chicago and always sells out.   Even now, they're already half full for both dates, so reserve your space today.
