OPENING: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time Launches Steppenwolf for Young Adults' 2018-19 Season

Chi IL Live Shows On Our Radar:

Steppenwolf for Young Adults Kicks Off the 2018-19 Season with
The 2015 Tony Award Winner for Best Play

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the
Night-Time
Adapted by Simon Stephens
Directed by Jonathan Berry
October 5 – October 27, 2018 in the Downstairs Theatre

Relaxed/Sensory-Friendly Performance October 27 at 3pm

Here at ChiIL Mama and ChiIL Live Shows, we're beyond excited about SYA's season opener. My daughter read the book for school and I joined her and read it too. We both loved it and can't wait to see Steppenwolf's take on this compelling story. I'll be out for the press opening on October 6th, so check back shortly after for my full review.

Steppenwolf for Young Adults (SYA) begins rehearsals next week for its first play of the 2018-19 season, which asks, “When you feel lost, how do you find your way?” Steppenwolf Artistic Producer Jonathan Berry directs SYA’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, featuring ensemble memberCaroline Neff.  Public performances of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time begin Friday, October 5, 2018 and run through Saturday, October 27, 2018 in the Downstairs Theatre, 1650 N Halsted St.

Single tickets ($20-$30) are now on sale through Audience Services at 312-335-1650 orsteppenwolf.org. Weekday performances are reserved for school groups; more than 15,000 Chicago Public School students will experience the production. More info at steppenwolf.org/education.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time features Steppenwolf ensemble member Caroline Neff as Siobhan. Also featured are Terry Bell (Christopher), Scott Allen Luke (Roger /Policeman/Ensemble), Cedric Mays (Ed), Rebecca Spence (Judy/Ensemble), Meg Thalken (Mrs. Alexander/Ensemble), Christopher M. Walsh (Uncle Terry/Station Policeman/Ensemble) and Eunice Woods (Mrs. Shears/Ensemble).

Based on the critically acclaimed book by Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time focuses on Christopher, a young boy with an extraordinary brain and an exceptional talent for mathematics. When the neighbor’s dog Wellington is found dead, Christopher launches an investigation into the mystery surrounding the dog’s murder. As he searches for the truth on his first ever excursion by himself, he uncovers surprises about himself and his family, exploring the hidden secrets and challenges in everyday life.

“The beautiful beating heart of this story, for me, has always been the journey of a broken family struggling through a remarkably difficult moment and discovering how to be whole again.  The Steppenwolf for Young Adults (SYA) production allows for us to be fully in conversation with the rewards and challenges inherent in these relationships, journeying with the remarkable Christopher as his world breaks apart and then reforms anew.  I’m so thrilled to be working on this play with this incredible team of actors and designers, and can’t wait to share it with the SYA audiences,” comments director Jonathan Berry.

Relaxed/Sensory-Friendly Performances
Steppenwolf is pleased to present a Relaxed/Sensory-Friendly performance for The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time on Saturday, October 27 at 3pm. Relaxed/Sensory-Friendly performances feature a relaxed performance environment and minor adjustments to sensory effects such as lighting and sound cues. House lights will be left up at a low level, and it’s okay for audience members to make noise, move, and leave the theater. Social narratives and character guides will be shared in advance of guests’ visit, and a quiet area will be designated in a section of the lobby. For more information, please email access@steppenwolf.org.

When a redacted and ominous letter arrives from her brother on the oil fields, thirteen-year-old Cozbi sets off for Anwar, Alaska to find him. Armed with a book on corporate communication strategy and a sharp axe, Cozbi battles her way through an Arctic wilderness in pursuit of her missing brother. But she'll have to face more than a multi-tentacled HR rep to learn the truth. Part mythic journey, part workplace satire, Borealis is a dark and funny adventure about family obligation, career aspiration and what we leave behind to make our way to the top.

Cozbi’s search-and-rescue tale to the inner workings of Big Oil travels between mundane cubicles crawling with monstrous executives to desk-jockeys trapped by the dangerous ice-bound surround and out to the slick, sea-soaked rigging platforms. The House employs an immersive design with huge pipelines traversing up, around and behind the audience creating unique pathways and playing spaces for actors.

Borealis was first developed at the Kennedy Center MFA Playwrights workshop in 2014. It received further development at UC San Diego, the Unicorn Theater, Mixed Blood, Cutting Ball Theater, Custom Made Theater Company, the Alliance Theater (Kendeda Prize Finalist), and The House Theatre of Chicago and the Chicago Performance Lab through the Theatre and Performance Studies Program at the University of Chicago

KINDIE LAND: SUKEY MOLLOY'S FIVE LITTLE OYSTERS ALBUM & 2 Books Out October 5th!

SUKEY MOLLOY'S
FIVE LITTLE OYSTERS!

FIFTH IN AWARD-WINNING SERIES OF CHILDREN'S ALBUMS
TO BE RELEASED
IN TANDEM WITH TWO COMPANION BOOKS IN OCTOBER

"Sukey is undeniably today's Mister Rogers."
-- Celebrity Parents Magazine

"Molloy has a strong, gentle, kindly voice, which she combines with light instrumentation to a wonderfully soothing effect."
-- Parents' Choice Award review of Sukey Molloy's I Am Sleepy!

With a bevy of awards proudly in hand, beloved children's musician Sukey Molloy puts a big smile on traditional favorites and mixes them with original songs, poetry, and a story for the October 5 release of her fifth album, Five Little Oysters!

October 5 will also see the release of two companion audio picture books by Sukey Molloy: Five Little Oysters! and The Story of Little Flame in the Arctic. Featuring colorful felt art images, these books are designed to be read while listening and singing along to Sukey's songs, courtesy of a song download link provided in each book.

There are certain songs that should be part of the childhood experience for every child. With her new album Five Little Oysters!, Sukey Molloy turns tradition upside down, shining a new light of fun, fun, fun on this classic repertoire with updated lyrics, a seemingly endless flow of irrepressibly humorous sound effects, and many delightful punctuations from the percussion department guaranteed to produce a parade of giggles. All of this hilarity is imbued with the magic of the up-close, cheery, participatory style that has become Sukey's calling card.

Joining Sukey as co-producer of Five Little Oysters! is Grammy-winner Larry Alexander (Diana Ross, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, David Bowie), who has served in this capacity for all five of Sukey's albums. Together they have created a recording for children that will surely set the standard for years to come with its graceful flow from beginning to end and a clean, clear sound that echoes first-rate production values. The musical integrity of the album, the cultural significance of the classic material, and the sweet nuances of Sukey Molloy's original lyrics and melodies present a trio of impeccable assets.

Five Little Oysters! kicks off with "It's Raining, It's Pouring," for which Sukey Molloy has adapted the lyrics to incorporate picture-perfect farm animal sounds and imagery, all set to a delightful Calypso beat. "Do Your Ears Hang Low" presents all of the little-known original verses frolicking in a carnival atmosphere. Whistles, cow moos, shuffling sandpaper blocks, cowbell, triangle, water stick, and bass drum partner with the physiologically absurd lyrics in describing almost every conceivable ear position, location, and characteristic!

Other highlights include Sukey's version of "She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain" (with a mighty fine fiddling interlude); "I've Been Working on the Railroad," in all its rollicking, fee-fi-fiddley-eye-oh glory; and the all-time grandfather of counting songs, "This Old Man," followed by a remarkably selfless rendition of "Simple Gifts," done here with purity and reverence, just the way it should be. Sukey concludes the album by reading her perfectly enchanting "The Story of Little Flame in the Arctic." Whether singing or speaking, Sukey Molloy's crystal-clear voice imprints a smile on every track of this beautiful album.

Sukey Molloy's award-winning body of work include the albums I Am Sleepy! with Sukey Molloy (2012; Parents' Choice Silver Award, Mom's Choice Gold Award), I Am Happy! with Sukey Molloy (2012; Creative Child CD of the Year Award, Mom's Choice Gold Award, Preferred Choice Award), I Like to Sing! with Sukey Molloy (2007; NAPPA Honors Award), Circle Songs! with Sukey Molloy (2005; Children's Music Web Award, Parent to Parent Adding Wisdom Award), and two Sukey's Circle! DVDs (2009 and 2010; NAPPA Honors Award, Mom's Choice Gold Award, Preferred Choice Award, NAPPA Rising Star Commendation).

The Five Little Oysters! album will be available at Amazon, iTunes, sukeymolloy.com, and at retail outlets nationwide. The Five Little Oysters! and The Story of Little Flame books will be available at Amazon, Etsy, and sukeymolloy.com.

18th Season Announced: Barrel of Monkeys' THAT’S WEIRD, GRANDMA 2018-19 Season

Chi IL Live Shows On Our Radar:

Barrel of Monkeys Announces
THAT’S WEIRD, GRANDMA 2018-19 Season
An Original Sketch Show Written by Kids,
Performed by Grownups, and Enjoyed by Humans

BOM's THAT’S WEIRD, GRANDMA has been a fav of ours here at ChiIL Mama & ChiIL Live Shows for decades. Check it out! They incorporate the best of kids' unabashed creativity in writing scenes and give them a pro twist, with staging by adult actors. The combination is a high energy concoction of crazy fun and often snort out loud funny. They run some Sundays at 3pm and Mondays at 8pm, when most theatres are dark, so other actors can enjoy a lighthearted night out. Yet the show is short and early enough that older kids and teens should have no problem catching the show and still making it home in time for a school night curfew. Best of all, Barrel of Monkeys is excited to be an inaugural Teen Arts Pass (TAP) partner.

TAP is a new initiative by Urban Gateways that gives young people ages 13-19 access to $5 tickets to see professional dance, music, and theater performances in and around Chicago. Learn more about the program and sign up here: http://teenartspass.urbangateways.org/

Barrel of Monkeys is thrilled to announce the 2018-19 season of its lauded original sketch show THAT’S WEIRD, GRANDMA, performing at the Neo-Futurist Theater, 5153 N. Ashland Ave. in Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood. For tickets and additional information, visit  barrelofmonkeys.org

Now in its eighteenth year, THAT’S WEIRD, GRANDMA features adaptations of stories written during Barrel of Monkeys’ creative writing residencies in Chicago elementary schools. BOM teaching artists guide 3rd through 5th graders through a six-week curriculum that uses theater to bring out the storyteller in every child. Afterward, BOM’s ensemble of professional actors, comedians and musicians bring the young authors’ stories to life as raucous sketches, songs and movement pieces, performing first for students in their schools and then for the public.

The stories resonate with adults while celebrating the imaginations of young people. Steppenwolf for Young Adults (SYA) To Produce We Are Proud to Present a Presentation About the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as South West Africa, From the German Südwestafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915

Chi IL Live Shows On Our Radar:

Steppenwolf for Young Adults to Present the Acclaimed Play

We Are Proud to Present a Presentation
About the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as
South West Africa, From the German Südwestafrika,
Between the Years 1884-1915

Written By Jackie Sibblies Drury
Directed by Hallie Gordon and Gabrielle Randle
March 2– March 16, 2019

Steppenwolf for Young Adults (SYA) announced today it will produce We Are Proud to Present a Presentation About the Herero of Namibia, Formerly Known as South West Africa, From the German Südwestafrika, Between the Years 1884-1915 by Jackie Sibblies Drury as the second production in the 2018/19 season. SYA Artistic Director Hallie Gordon co-directs with Gabrielle Randle. SYA’s 2018/19 Season explores the question, “When you feel lost, how do you find your way?”

We Are Proud to Present a Presentation…will be produced in place of the previously announced production of Radical, a new play inspired by the book White American Youth by Christian Picciolini. SYA Artistic Director Hallie Gordon shares, “After months of discussions with teachers, Young Adult Council members, artists and designers it became clear that adapting this book for the stage would not be of service to our young adult audiences at this time. I am so grateful to the author, playwright, and our incredible community of educators, teens and artists for sharing their voices, and to the Steppenwolf family for trusting me to know when to push forward and pull back.”

“SYA is dedicated to creating work that is both provocative and drives us to think harder and deeper about who we are and the choices we make. We are so excited to be producing We Are Proud to Present a Presentation…a powerful story that explores themes of race, representation, storytelling and the power group-thinking can have on an individual. Our season theme is “When you feel lost, how do you find your way?” – a question that every character in this play must ask themselves. SYA hasn’t yet produced a play structured like this one, and we are thrilled that we have the opportunity to share it with our audiences,” adds Gordon.

When a group of actors gathers together to give a presentation about a long-forgotten—or possibly never remembered—genocide, they realize that summaries based on history books aren’t nearly enough to capture the complexity of human extermination—or human interaction. We Are Proud to Present a Presentation…tells the story of what happens when, in an effort to dig deeper, the nobly intentioned ensemble crashes into their own simmering fears and unconscious prejudices, coming face to face with the potential for brutality in all of us.

Public performances for We Are Proud to Present a Presentation…will take place March 2 (3 & 7:30pm); March 8 (7:30pm); March 9 (3 & 7:30pm); March 15 (7:30pm); March 16 (3 & 7:30pm) in the Upstairs Theatre. Performances Tuesday – Friday at 10am are reserved for school groups only and available by visiting steppenwolf.org/education. This season, more than 15,000 Chicago Public School students, teachers and community will see a Steppenwolf for Young Adults production. Single tickets to public performances ($15-20) go on sale at a later date.

My daughter went through this audition process several years ago and the Goodman staff was so friendly and welcoming, they made it a fun process. Do come early and expect long lines for the initial sign up. Leave loads of extra time for parking and bring activities. We recommend ducking out for doughnuts during the window between sign up and your audition time.

Committed to three core values of Quality, Diversity and Community, the Goodman proactively makes inclusion the fabric of the institution and develops education and community engagement programs that support arts as education. ChiIL Mama's Chi, IL Picks List:
Family Friendly Theatre Fun

Experience a young girl’s journey to find her true colors with the musical adaptation of the popular children’s book by Victoria Kann and Elizabeth Kann, PINKALICIOUS at The Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences, 10 Marriott Drive in Lincolnshire, from July 14 through August 12, 2018. Filled with a series of adventures and important life lessons, this fun and whimsical tale will be directed and choreographed by Amanda Tanguay (The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Velveteen Rabbit), with musical direction by Michael Mahler (Mary Poppins, My One and Only, The Music Man, composer/lyricist of October Sky, Hero).

This is the tale of Pinkalicious, a little girl who can’t stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. Her pink indulgence lands her at the doctor’s office with Pinkititis, an affliction that turns her pink from head to toe – a dream come true for this pink loving enthusiast. But when her hue goes too far, she must figure out a way to get out of this pink predicament.

“Different than most productions of PINKALICIOUS, we have drawn inspiration from children’s instruments to enhance the amazing score and script,” says Director Amanda Zimmerman. “With various character journeys taking place and the use of instruments on-stage, this production provides the perfect theatrical experience for the whole family to engage, interact, and learn together.”

This production will feature set and properties design by Rachel Rauscher, costume design by Jesus Perez, lighting design by Nick Belley and Aaron Lorenz, and sound design by Robert E. Gilmartin.
