Join Us For The 3rd Annual "What Drives Her" Luncheon and Networking Event at The Chicago Auto Show Friday, Feb. 8th

Chicago Auto Show Announces 3rd Annual
"What Drives Her"
Luncheon and Networking Event

I've been attending The Chicago Auto Show since the early 90's and covering it during the media preview days for a decade. 2019 is no exception. I'll be back out shooting original photo filled features, and working on sponsored posts with A Girls Guide to Cars. RSVP and join me at the What Drives Her luncheon & panel or follow along vicariously on social media by watching for the event hashtag #WDH2019. We'll be live streaming and covering the event on social media in real time.

Chicago Auto Show organizers, in partnership with A Girls Guide to Cars and Women in Automotive, announced the third annual What Drives Her luncheon and networking event during the show's Media Preview on Friday, Feb. 8 at McCormick Place.

Influential women will come together to highlight industry trends and share personal experiences surrounding the impact that females have on the automotive industry. The overarching theme this year will focus on the major shifts that are taking place in the automotive industry, including the ways that women are shaping its evolution.

"General Motors CEO Mary Barra is often quoted as saying the auto industry will see more change in the next five years than the last 50," said Autotrader Executive Analyst Michelle Krebs. "Whether it is five years or more, the shift towards electric and autonomous vehicles as well as new ways to acquire personal transportation is occurring now, generating tremendous opportunities for creative women to reinvent what has been a male-dominated business."

The 2019 What Drives Her event will feature a robust lineup of female speakers who will discuss the integral role women play within the auto industry as contributors, consumers and drivers of purchasing decisions.

"Women buy or influence 85 percent of all vehicle purchases and hold the keys to $450 billion in spending each year, yet the biggest challenge is educating them as consumers and users of new technology," said Scotty Reiss, founder of A Girls Guide to Cars. "The most powerful way to change this is by engaging them as employees, leaders and innovators."

Autotrader's Krebs will moderate the first panel discussion surrounding how females are driving change in the auto industry. Panelists include Jessica Petty, manager of customer data analytics, Hyundai; Jeneen Rippey, vice president of global quality, electronics division, ZF; and Edie Wines, instructor, National Automobile Dealers Association.

Between the first and second panel discussions, Leah Marshall, director, influencer marketing, with the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), will present ANA's female-focused #SeeHer initiative.

The second panel discussion topic will be centered around work, life and creating balance while building a career. Cars.com Editor-in-Chief Jennifer Newman will moderate the panel of women including Kathy Gilbert, global director of sales & business development, CDK; Laurie King, SVP, global operations & strategic solutions, Turtle Wax; Subi Ghosh, senior director of dealer strategy, Stream Companies; Lauren Brandt, Facebook client solutions manager and Returnity Project co-founder; and Kerri Wise, vice president, industry education and relations, TrueCar.

The What Drives Her event continues to be one example of how Chicago Auto Show organizers actively engage the female demographic. Foresight Research reports the Chicago Auto Show has an almost even split of male and female attendees: 45 percent of which are female.

"As the nation's largest consumer auto show, one can argue the Chicago Auto Show is the perfect place to assess trends - not just locally but on a national level as well," said Kelly Webb Roberts, a board member for the Chicago Automobile Trade Association, producer of the Chicago Auto Show. "We're thrilled to continue to host this event to bring together some of the most influential women in the industry who are at the forefront of this change."

Pre-registration for What Drives Her on Friday, Feb. 8 is required. Please click here to register. What Drives Her begins at 11:15 a.m. with a coffee networking event at the Grand Concourse Media Stage (inside McCormick Place) and concludes in Hyundai's exhibit at 2:30 p.m. with a wine and dessert reception. Attendees are encouraged to use event hashtag #WDH2019 when posting on social media.

Event sponsors include Autotrader, Facebook, Hyundai, Lot Linx, TrueCar, Turtle Wax and ZF.

Disney On Ice presents Mickey’s Search Party! surprised me by being such an incredible, creative spectacle that I—a grown woman with, ahem, sophisticated taste—thoroughly enjoyed it.

I walked into the venue looking forward to two hours of minimal parenting for which I would earn mom-of-the-week award from my 8-year-old daughter and her friends. I knew it would be pretty and that the girls would enjoy seeing Elsa, Moana, et all. Win/win, right? Frankly that alone is well worth the price of admission.

I sat smugly enjoying the pre-show. The cohosts were engaging the audience, as were Captain Hook’s hench-people (yay for women pirates!). This was going just as expected. The girls had seen Tinkerbell wandering the halls and spotted her in the arena. They were in fantasyland heaven and I could feel a bit of the week’s stress leave my shoulders.

As the show began—Tinkerbell captured, a magic meter we all have to fill up to rescue her, Mickey and Minnie and the gang bringing us into their mission—I thought how well Disney on Ice has this whole “engage the kids” thing down.
“That’s neat,” I thought as I saw some trampoline tricks happening during the “Belle” segment. “They’ve got acrobats too! And the skating is good. And the costumes. They’re not messing around here!”

And, of course, the kids were thrilled to see Woody and Buzz Lightyear—and a HUGE ball “jumped” off the cool interactive screen they had and into the audience who got to work together to get it back in the box before Andy came. The number that ensued from the green soldiers was so spectacular that it sealed the deal for me. This wasn’t something I was sitting through with the girls. I was enjoying it just as much as they were.

The circus arts, awesome screen (it’s hard to describe how well it integrated with and amplified the stories—especially in creating an impressive Te Fiti for Moana to face and heal), shared mission, and action happening across multiple levels and disciplines, much of it right from the audience made the experience feel like a big serendipity. At the heart of it was a strong foundation of beautiful skating, choreography and costumes.

I was completely gob smacked by the sugar-skull-populated, psychedelic afterlife created for the Coco scene. The girls’ favorite segments were Moana and Frozen. I have to say that a song we parents all seem to have had enough of, Let It Go, was downright moving when sung by a stadium full of children.
So, yes, your “kids” should definitely see this. Wink.

REVIEW: The Kid Who Would Be King Opens Everywhere January 25, 2019

ChiIL Mama's Chi, IL Picks List
What We're Watching:
The Kid Who Would Be King

Guest Review
by kimberly robb baker

What kid today couldn’t use a little goodness, love, and perseverance? But what kid today would even relate to those concepts?

I’ll tell you who: a kid who saw The Kid Who Would Be King.

I took my tween son and his guy friends to preview this modern, humorous take on the story of King Arthur, and the consensus was “awesome.”

The set-up is familiar: the protagonist (Alex—played by Louis Ashbourne Serkis) and his best friend (Bedders—played by Dean Chaumoo) are bullied at school. Protagonist is troubled at home—in this case by the fact that he knows little about his dad except for the fact that his mom says he had “demons to battle.”

There is the whole hero’s journey: the arrival of the teacher, the call to adventure, the refusal, the acquiescence. The imagery of Excalibur stuck in a stone in an urban construction site was fun. As was a teenaged Merlin with a touch of Cosmo Kramer-like physical comedy.

The formulaic nature of the plot is acknowledged in the movie, with characters comparing themselves to Sam and Frodo as well as Harry Potter and his crew.

At the heart of the story is a quest embarked upon by Alex, Bedders, and their two bullies, Lance (Tom Taylor) and Kaye (Rhianna Dorris). The stakes are high as the fate of Britain lies with them—and Alex hopes to finally meet his father. Merlin instructs them in a secularized chivalric code which boils down to: be on the side of good, take care of your loved ones, and never give up.

I appreciated the diversity of the cast, the modern-day challenges the kids faced, and the fact that the evil force was feminine for once (King Arthur’s jealous sister Morgana, portrayed by Rebecca Ferguson). And Patrick Stewart, completely charming as the elder Merlin, brings needed gravitas to the character and the film.

What the kids liked: The magic performed by Merlin—a kind of snapping, clapping thing that looks odd until you witness its incredible power (though they complained that, in the times he flew about as an owl, he never used bird droppings on the enemy). The inevitable huge battle scene. The humor.

All-in-all, The Kid Who Would Be King was a perfect weekend romp with a group of savvy kids who needed something thoughtfully made to lure them away from Dan TDM for a couple of hours.

Writers Theatre opens the 2019 tour of The MLK Project: The Fight for Civil Rights With FREE MLK Day Chicago Performance at the Chicago History Museum

Writers Theatre opens the 2019 tour of
The MLK Project: The Fight for Civil Rights
By Yolanda Androzzo
Directed by Tasia A. Jones
Featuring Angela Alise

Free performance at the Chicago History Museum
on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
January 21, 2019
10:30am

Writers Theatre opens its 13th annual tour of The MLK Project: The Fight for Civil Rights, written by Yolanda Androzzo, directed by Tasia A. Jones and featuring Angela Alise. A special Martin Luther King, Jr. Day public performance will take place at 10:30am on January 21 at the Chicago History Museum, 1601 N Clark Street in Chicago. The kickoff event also includes a post-show community discussion. The event is free and open to the public, and audience members will also receive free museum admission for the remainder of the day.

Weaving together poetry, hip hop and history, The MLK Project: The Fight for Civil Rights is a one-woman show that follows Chicago student Alaya’s personal transformation through studying the Civil Rights Movement. Alaya uses her fists as an outlet for anger. After interviewing local heroes of the Movement, she discovers she can put “anger into action” and that her power is in her voice and her hip hop, not violence.

Seen by more than 77,000 students, this dynamic, cross-cultural, multi-media performance interlaces personal interviews of Chicago-based Civil Rights activists, featuring both celebrated and unsung heroes of the Movement, such as Reverend Samuel “Billy” Kyles, Founder of the DuSable Museum of African American History Dr. Margaret Taylor Goss Burroughs, Reverend Jesse Jackson and Puerto Rican poet and activist David Hernandez, among others.

The 2019 production will tour to more than 35 venues during its 6-week run, including  Chicago Public Schools, community centers, and juvenile detention centers.  All performances on the tour include a post-show discussion and a study guide with wrap-around curriculum.

Writers Theatre will also feature two special onsite performance of The MLK Project on Saturday, February 2nd, 2019 at 4:00pm and 7:00pm. Tickets for this performance are $20 for adults and $10 for students and may be purchased by calling the WT Box Office at 847-242-6000 or https://www.writerstheatre.org/the-mlk-project-the-fight-for-civil-rights.

Additional Writers Theatre’s Education Programs include:

Under the guidance of a Writers Theatre Teaching Artist, students engage in a layered study of a book and enter a rigorous artistic process that merges writing, discussion, and vocabulary with arts-integrated theatre projects. Residencies culminate in a final performance of student-created work as students use voice, body, and imagination to make new and exciting connections to the text.

ACTIVATE is Writers Theatre’s wraparound residency designed to deepen students’ engagement with the art on our stages. Students and teachers involved in ACTIVATE attend an exclusive student-only matinee performance of a play in our season, prepare for and extend their experience at the theatre through in-school pre and post-performance participatory workshops designed to investigate contextual information and the major themes in the play, and participate in a post-show discussion with WT artists and educators.

Writers Theatre Youth Council, an artistic leadership advisory board for motivated, passionate high school students interested in hands-on, in-depth exposure to arts administration. Council members get behind-the-scenes access to Writers Theatre productions, artists, and programs, participate in play readings and artistic discussion groups, host youth nights at the theatre, and develop artistic leadership skills. ABOUT WRITERS THEATRE
For 25 years, Writers Theatre has captivated Chicagoland audiences with inventive interpretations of classic work, a bold approach to contemporary theatre and a dedication to creating the most intimate theatrical experience possible.

Under the artistic leadership of Michael Halberstam and the executive leadership of Kathryn M. Lipuma, Writers Theatre has grown to become a major Chicagoland cultural destination with a national reputation for excellence, being called the top regional theatre in the nation by The Wall Street Journal. The company, which plays to a sold-out and discerning audience of more than 60,000 patrons each season, has garnered critical praise for the consistent high quality and intimacy of its artistry—providing the finest interpretations of both classic and contemporary theatre in its two intensely intimate venues.

In February 2016, Writers Theatre opened a new, state-of-the-art facility. This established the company's first permanent home—a new theatre center in downtown Glencoe, designed by the award-winning, internationally renowned Studio Gang Architects, led by Founder and Design Principal Jeanne Gang, FAIA, in collaboration with Theatre Consultant Auerbach Pollock Friedlander. The new facility has allowed the Theatre to continue to grow to accommodate its audience, while maintaining its trademark intimacy. The new facility resonates with and complements the Theatre’s neighboring Glencoe community, adding tremendous value to Chicagoland and helping to establish the North Shore as a premier cultural destination.

OPENING: ALL CHILDISH THINGS VIA FIRST FOLIO THEATRE January 23 through February 24

ChiIL Live Shows on our radar
FIRST FOLIO THEATRE PRESENTS COMEDY
ALL CHILDISH THINGS

From January 23 through February 24

For its first performance in 2019, First Folio Theatre (Mayslake Peabody Estate, 31st St. & Rt. 83.) is thrilled to present Joseph Zettelmaier’s contemporary comedy heist ALL CHILDISH THINGS, previewing January 23-25, opening January 26 and running through February 24, 2019. “Witty, suspenseful, and wonderfully revealing about friendship,” according to The Cincinnati Enquirer, ALL CHILDISH THINGS gives audiences the chance to laugh into the New Year, reminisce on their childhood and experience the carefree and clumsy antics of an easy-to-love cohort of friends.

I'll be out to review for ChiILMama.com at the press opening, January 26th, so check back soon. Since I head a pop culture lovin' family, I'm particularly interested in checking out ALL CHILDISH THINGS.

From the playwright who wrote The Gravedigger, Dr. Seward’s Dracula and The Man-Beast comes a comedy heist of sorts where Star Wars meets Ocean’s 11. In ALL CHILDISH THINGS, a group of life-long friends and Star Wars fans come up with the perfect caper: break into the Kenner warehouse and steal a treasure trove of Star Wars memorabilia. Everything starts off as smoothly as a Jedi mind trick until the Dark Side starts to beckon. Will divided loyalties and greed lead their friendship to implode like the Death Star or will the Force be with them?

ALL CHILDISH THINGS, written by Joseph Zettelmaier and directed by Melanie Keller, features Eric Eilersen as Dave, Stephanie Shum as Kendra, Bobby Richards as Max, Alberto Mendoza as Carter and First Folio Artistic Associate Joe Foust in the role of The Big Man. The artistic team includes Scenic Design by eight-time Jeff Nominee Angela Weber Miller, Sound Design by four-time Jeff Award Winner Christopher Kriz, Costume Design by four-time Jeff Nominee Rachel Lambert, Co-Props Design by two-time Jeff Nominee Cassy Schillo and Wendy Huber, Violence Design by Joe Foust, and Lighting Design by Julie Mack, with Stage Manager Colleen Layton assisted by Wallace Craig. Understudies include Emma Jo Boyden, Nick Caesar, and Patrick TJ Kelly.

All performances of ALL CHILDISH THINGS will take place at the Mayslake Peabody Estate, located at 1717 31st St., off Rt. 83, in Oak Brook. First Folio is easily accessible from the East-West Tollway (I-88) or the Stevenson Expressway (I-55). Free parking is available on the grounds. Performance times are as follows: Wednesdays at 8 p.m., Thursdays at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m. Saturdays at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. Preview tickets are $25. Regular priced tickets are $34 Wednesdays and Thursdays (seniors and students are $29) and $44 on Fridays through Sundays (seniors and students are $39). Season subscriptions and individual tickets may be purchased by calling the box office at 630.986.8067 or online at www.firstfolio.org

OPENING: Nina Simone: Four Women at Northlight Theatre Through March 2, 2019

ChiIL Live Shows on our radar
Northlight Theatre
continues its 2018-19 season with
Nina Simone: Four Women

Written by Christina Ham
Directed by Kenneth L. Roberson
Featuring Melanie Brezill, Sydney Charles,
Deanna Reed-Foster, Ariel Richardson, and Daniel Riley

January 24 – March 2, 2019

I'll be out for the press opening February 1, so check back soon for my full review. I'm eager to catch Nina Simone: Four Women. It's not only an ode to the power of music and women in the fight for civil rights, but a still too timely reminder that Black Lives Matter and liberty and justice for all have not been achieved yet.

Northlight Theatre, under the direction of Artistic Director BJ Jones and Executive Director Timothy J. Evans, continues its 2018-19 season with Nina Simone: Four Women, written by Christina Ham and directed by Kenneth L. Roberson. Nina Simone: Four Women runs January 24 – March 2, 2019 at Northlight Theatre, 9501 Skokie Blvd in Skokie.

Nina Simone’s song "Four Women" was released as part of her 1966 album Wild Is the Wind. It tells the story of four different African American women, each representing an African-American stereotype in society.

In the aftermath of 1963’s 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, Nina Simone rocked the nation with “Four Women,” her tribute in song to the four little girls lost in the tragedy. Powerful anthems such as “Mississippi Goddam,” “Old Jim Crow,” and “To Be Young, Gifted and Black” followed, fueling the Civil Rights movement and transforming her public persona from songstress to activist. Celebrate Ms. Simone’s lasting legacy in this provocative and personal musical journey.

Artistic Director BJ Jones comments, “Nina Simone’s musical genius is undeniable, and her leadership in the Civil Rights Movement stems from her musical articulation of its principles and goals. Northlight audiences can expect to learn about Simone’s extraordinary talent and her discovery of her activist voice, which syncs with this moment in the Black Lives Matter movement. It also reveals how important women were in the Civil Rights Movement and how little credit they were given historically.”

The cast of Nina Simone: Four Women includes Melanie Brezill (Sweet Thing), Sydney Charles (Nina Simone), Deanna Reed-Foster (Sarah), Ariel Richardson (Sephronia), and Daniel Riley (Sam Waymon).

The creative team includes Christopher Rhoton (set design), Michael Alan Stein (costume design), Lee Fiskness (lighting design) and Lindsay Jones (sound design). The stage manager is Rita Vreeland and the dramaturg is Lauren Shouse.

Northlight's production of Nina Simone: Four Women is supported in part by Alan Zunamon and Nancy Cunniff. The 2018-19 Season is supported by BMO Harris and ComEd, An Exelon Company.

Nina Simone: Four Women premiered at Park Square Theatre in St. Paul, MN in March 2016.

Performing in night clubs, she turned her interest to jazz, blues and folk music and released her first album in 1957, scoring a Top 20 hit with the track "I Loves You Porgy." In the ‘60s, Simone expanded her repertory in exemplary fashion while becoming identified as a leading voice of the Civil Rights Movement. She later lived abroad and experienced major mental health and financial issues, though she enjoyed a career resurgence in the 1980s. Simone died in France on April 21, 2003.
